Manage routing templates

A routing template is a saved, reusable sequence of operations for a part specification — the routing a production run follows through your shop.

Create a routing templateCopy Anchor Link

1. Open the part specification and scroll to the Routing Templates section.
2. Select the + button to open the Add Routing Template dialog.
3. Enter a Name and add your operations under Routing steps in the order they should run.
4. Optionally turn on Set as default, then select Save.

💡 You can also save a routing template from the scheduling dialog. After customizing the operations for a specific work order, use the Save as routing template option to capture that routing for future reuse.

Approve a templateCopy Anchor Link

New templates are approved automatically unless the Require approved routing templates for production setting is on. With it on, new templates are created as Unapproved and can't be used to schedule work orders until they're approved.

1. In the routing templates section, locate the template marked Unapproved.
2. Select the Approve (check mark) icon on that template.

ℹ️ An optional operator setting can require that parts have an approved routing template before a work order can be scheduled. 👉 Routing template approval

Set the default templateCopy Anchor Link

The default template is applied automatically when a new work order is created for the part. Only one template can be the default at a time.

1. In the routing templates section, find the approved template you want to use as the default.
2. Select the star icon on that template. It becomes the default immediately, and a confirmation toast appears.

Deprecate a templateCopy Anchor Link

A template is frozen as soon as any work order has been created from it — edits are rejected. To retire a frozen template and replace it with an updated version:

1. In the routing templates section, select the Deprecate & replace icon on the old template.
2. In the Replace Routing Template dialog, update the name and operations, optionally turn on Set as default, and select Save.

The new template is created, and the old one is marked Deprecated with a Replaced by badge naming its successor. If the old template was the default, the new one takes over as default.

To retire a template that no work order has used, select its Deprecate icon and confirm. Deprecating the default template this way reverts the part to Automatic routing.

ℹ️ Existing work orders are unaffected — each run keeps the routing snapshot it was created with.

☝️ Power user tip: if no template is designated as the default, each work order's routing is derived fresh from your current process configuration — changes to the process are picked up automatically by future runs, with no edits to the part spec needed.

Delete a templateCopy Anchor Link

You can delete a template that no work order has been created from.

1. In the routing templates section, select the Delete (trash) icon on the template.
2. Select Delete to confirm. This can't be undone.

⚠️ A template already referenced by a work order has no Delete icon — deprecate it instead.
